Light The Night 2018

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Walk

October 18, 2018
Bushnell Park, Hartford, Connecticut

Cantor Colburn is sponsoring the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Hartford Light The Night Walk and biotech associate Nicholas Herrel, Ph.D., Esq. is the event chairperson. The event takes place at Bushnell Park on Thursday, October 18, from 5-8 in the evening. Team Cantor Colburn and many other corporate and community teams will come together as a community to honor survivors, raise awareness of blood cancers, and remember those who have lost their battle.

Dr. Herrel has been volunteering with LLS for four years and is a member of the Connecticut Westchester Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Board of Trustees.  He is a Ph.D. microbiologist, and before entering private practice, he was a research scientist studying microbial infections and cancer.

LLS is at the forefront of finding new cancer treatments, having provided funding for 15 out of the 18 new FDA-approved cancer therapies in 2017.  The LLS exists to find cures for blood cancers - which are often subsequently used to treat other cancers - and provide support (including financial) to patients.  In fact, approximately 40% of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA between 2000 and 2016 were first approved to treat blood cancer patients.  Last year alone, the LLS distributed over $46 million in research funding, including to local universities, and $73 million in financial assistance to patients. Nearly $1 million of this financial assistance was distributed to families in our local chapter alone.  Since its inception, the LLS has invested more than $1 billion to advance cancer therapies and save lives.
