Managing Partner Brad Lawrence quoted in Hartford Business Journal on Datto–Slide Dispute
M. Brad Lawrence, Managing Partner of Cantor Colburn LLP, was quoted in the June 29, 2026 issue of the Hartford Business Journal in an article examining ongoing litigation between Datto and Slide, two companies in the backup and disaster recovery software space.
In the article, "Datto founder McChord is back in the backup business — and the company he built is suing him," Brad commented on the legal complexities surrounding employee mobility and intellectual property, particularly the distinction between general knowledge and protected company information. He noted that determining whether former employees improperly used confidential information is often not clear-cut and depends on the specific circumstances of a case.
Brad also discussed how courts approach noncompete agreements and the broader challenge of balancing protection of proprietary information with an individual’s ability to continue working in their field. Additionally, he provided insight into the differences between trade secret and patent protection, including how each is enforced in litigation.
